Utah House Speaker Brad Wilson will resign from the state legislature to make a run for the U.S. Senate seat that Mitt Romney will vacate in early 2025.
SALT LAKE CITY — Utah House Speaker Brad Wilson announced Monday he will resign from the state legislature to make a run for the U.S. Senate seat that Mitt Romney will vacate in early 2025.Wilson, who will leave the legislature on Nov. 15, had long been expected to run for the seat even before Romney's announcement last week that he would not seek reelection.
“Serving in the Utah House of Representatives and as Speaker of the House has been the honor, privilege, and opportunity of a lifetime — and I don’t say that lightly," he said in a statement."I did not anticipate the lifelong impact of my decision to run for public office nearly 14 years ago. My service in the Legislature stems far beyond the policies passed and progress achieved.
"I have built lifelong friendships and come to love and appreciate the people of Utah. I am excited for my next chapter and have full confidence in my peers in the House, Senate, and executive branch to continue making Utah the best place to live, learn, work, and play.” Wilson has first elected to the Utah House of Representatives in 2011 and has served as Speaker since January 2019.
Earlier this year, Wilson formed an exploratory committee that allowed for fundraising ahead of formally declaring his candidacy.
