An interim report from the House Judiciary Committee states that Chicago and Illinois, both classified as sanctuary jurisdictions, released more than 500 individuals with federal immigration detainers between early 2023 and early 2025. The report claims these releases include persons involved in serious crimes such as murder and robbery. Local laws prohibit police from inquiring about immigration status or cooperating with federal civil enforcement, leading to the release of nearly 100 individuals by the Illinois Department of Corrections and 408 by the Cook County Sheriff in 2025.
“Over the past 20 months alone, illegal aliens have gone on to commit murder, domestic violence, and robbery after the Chicago Police Department released them back onto Illinois streets in defiance of ICE detainers.
”A House Judiciary Committee interim report shows that Illinois and Chicago, both considered sanctuary jurisdictions, released over 500 illegal aliens despite ICE detainers.
“Over the past 20 months alone, illegal aliens have gone on to commit murder, domestic violence, and robbery after the Chicago Police Department released them back onto Illinois streets in defiance of ICE detainers,”Rauner’s law, prohibiting local governments from signing contracts with ICE and forbidding ‘officials from inquiring about the citizenship or immigration status of an individual in custody unless they’re presented with a federal criminal warrant, or otherwise required by federal law.
’” prohibits city agencies, including the Chicago Police Department, from: etaining, arresting, or continuing to hold anyone solely based on their immigration status or civil immigration warrants ransferring individuals to ICE custody for civil immigration enforcement ssisting federal immigration authorities in any civil enforcement operations, such as providing traffic perimeters, on-site support, or sharing detention information ncluding immigration-related questions in city agency forms or maintaining records of a person’s status; it also removes “citizen” terminology in official code, replacing it with inclusive language such as “person” or “resident” Nearly 100 criminal aliens released by the Illinois Department of Corrections in 2024 and 2025. 408 criminal aliens released by the Cook County Sheriff’s Office in 2025 instead of honoring ICE detainers.
Yeah, CCSO never honored an ICE detainer in 2025. In January 2025, the Chicago Police Department released an Ecuadorian illegal alien accused of assault and luring a child. The CPD ignored the ICE detainer.
These releases include a Mexican national sentenced to 30 years in IDOC custody for attempted murder, aggravated criminal sexual assault with bodily harm, and aggravated kidnapping; a Mexican national convicted of attempted murder with intent to kill; and a Mexican national sentenced to 17 years’ imprisonment for assault on a child. IDOC also previously released a Jamaican national who had served 28 years in prison for murder.
The Cook County Jail didn’t honor another ICE detainer for an illegal alien, who was subsequently released. That illegal alien ended upLoyola University freshman Sheridan Gorman murdered by Jose Medina-Medina, an illegal alien from Venezuela. The Biden administration released Medina-Medina at the border in 2023. Months later, police arrested him for shoplifting.
He murdered Gorman three years later. Katie Abraham, a student at Ohio University, was killed in a car crash by Julio Cucol Bol, an illegal alien from Guatemala, because he drove drunk. Democrat-run Illinois's radical statewide sanctuary policies ensure criminal aliens are free to reoffend, even after committing brutal crimes like:
