By Dothraki standards, Rhaenyra Targaryen and Laenor Velaryon’s wedding was a dull affair. But for the new royal couple, it was anything but. Inside Queen Alicent’s bold fashion choice, Ser Criston’s ugly meltdown, and more:
is written from the perspective of a historian who was not alive during the height of the Targaryen reign, and therefore relies on unreliable testimonies to tell the tale. Few agree on exactly what happened between them, but there’s no disputing Criston and Rhaenyra’s steep fall from each other’s good graces. The show moved away from the version of events depicted by this period of history’s most salacious source, a court jester named Mushroom.
From Martin: “[Criston] told Rhaenyra that he had a ship waiting on the bay, and begged her to flee with him across the narrow sea. They would be wed in Tyrosh or Old Volantis, where her father’s writ did not run, and no one would care that Ser Criston had betrayed his vows as a member of the Kingsguard. His prowess with sword and morningstar was such that he did not doubt he could find some merchant prince to take him into service. But Rhaenyra refused him.
The book leaves the version of events up to the reader. The show does not. However, the book’s various sources all agree on what happens next between Rhaenyra Targaryen and Criston Cole. As it’s said elsewhere of theuniverse: if you thought this story had a happy ending, you weren’t paying attention. Before we close out the look at the book this week, let’s go all the way back to the beginning of the episode: Daemon Targaryen murdering his wife, Rhea Royce of the Vale of Arryn.
Lady Rhea dies in the book, as she does on the show, though the circumstances are much more enigmatic to the reader. Martin tells us she fell off her horse while hawking, still alive “for nine days before finally feeling well enough to leave her bed… only to collapse and die within an hour of rising.” The timing doesn’t work out all that well for Daemon to have killed his wife in the book, as it happens while he’s still at war in the Stepstones.
