A house fire in Nanaimo, British Columbia, sent one person to the hospital. The fire broke out in the afternoon on Monday, January 27th, in the Cinnabar Valley neighborhood. The homeowner, Roman Mainwaring, noticed smoke and flames coming from under the deck and called 911. Neighbors assisted with putting out the fire before emergency responders arrived. The fire caused damage to the roof, deck, and belongings. One cat is still missing.

Emergency responders transported one person to hospital following a house fire in south Nanaimo, where a column of smoke could be seen wafting from the property.“Within 30 seconds, half the house was involved,” said Roman Mainwaring, who lives at the house on Ranchview Drive, off Richardson Road in Nanaimo.

“The smoke alarm went off, and I thought I smelled smoke. I just cooked something, so we thought maybe I left the stove on. But that wasn’t it,” he said. Video captured by CHEK News outside the house Tuesday showed damage to the roof, rear deck and backyard belongings. The basement level was boarded up.BC Emergency Health Services says primary care paramedics responded to the structure fire around 3:34 p.m. Jan. 27, arriving via two ambulances.
