The report said an electronic voting system was the best way to ensure votes continued in Parliament, without risking the health and safety of MPs

Since mid-March the House of Commons has sat sparingly, mostly in a reduced form with about 50 MPs physically in the chamber and everyone else participating via videoconference.

The majority view on the committee suggested multiple alternatives should be tested, but said an electronic voting system was the best way to ensure votes continued in Parliament, without risking the health and safety of MPs. The proposed app would allow MPs to vote from anywhere in the country and according to the committee’s report they believe it could be done securely, with little danger of an MPs vote being hacked.

“There were no actual or suspected COVID-19 cases linked to them, no precautionary quarantines or self-isolation required because of attendance at them, and none of them have been of interest in any contact tracing investigation,” Conservatives wrote in their dissent.
