For all the money spent on hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Qatar could not purchase a competitive team.
They needed a little help to keep from being embarrassed by Ecuador in the opening game of the tournament, losing 2-0, in front of 67,372 fans at the Al Bayt Stadium just north of the capital Doha.
While Ecuador was celebrating and Qatar was trying to get over the shock, the video assistant referee booth buzzed Italian referee Daniele Orsato to let them know they were looking at something, anything, which might disallow the goal. Valencia took the ball around Saad, but was tripped along the way and Orsato, who is considered one of the best referees in the world, had no choice but to signal to the spot.
The members of Qatar’s national team all play in its domestic league and are not very well known outside the region. Valencia scored again in the 31st minute, powering a header past Saad off a cross by Angelo Preciado, after being left completely unmarked.
