Dave Stewart • The GuardianA trio of high-class Gold Cup and Saucer trials will be presented as part of Old Home Week Racing at Red Shores at the Charlottetown Driving Park on Saturday and Monday evenings with the 22 horses trying to make the $100,000 final.
The top three horses from each trial will advance to the nine-horse $100,000 Gold Cup and Saucer final, presented by Atlantic Lottery, on Aug. 20. The first two $12,500 trials line up on Aug. 13 at the city track.Trial 1 is carded as race 14 on the evening with the program getting underway at 7 p.m. 2020 Gold Cup and Saucer champion Time To Dance has the preferable post position 1 in the field for trainer-driver Marc Campbell and owners Brent Campbell of Charlottetown and Matt McDonald of Ontario. Cadillac Bayama is the favourite in the $12,500 Trial from post 7 with David Dowling getting the catch driving call on the recent 1:50 flat winner for new trainer Colin Johnson.
Trial 2 goes in race 15 and the third-place finisher from the 2021 Gold Cup and Saucer final is back and looking to improve his standing. Legion Seelster has the rail with Quebec driving phenom Jimmy Gagnon in the race bike for trainer Victor Puddy after the horse won his most recent race in 1:50 flat at Woodbine Mohawk Park in Ontario. $1.5-million winner Sintra has post 4 with MacDonald driving the pacer for his brother Anthony MacDonald’s Thestable.
Aug. 15 has Trial 3 featuring one of the greatest drivers in the history of North American Harness Racing, Wally Hennessey, making his P.E.I. return aboard favourite Patrikthepiranha A for trainer Melissa Beckwith and owner Thestable.ca.
