The man who once toured the country dressed as a Catholic cardinal appears at Murder by the Book on Friday.
Grady Hendrix, arguably the greatest horror author of the past decade, is completely and unashamedly happy with his reputation as a literary freak show. What do you expect of a man who wrote “Horrorstör,” a novel set in a haunted IKEA and whose cover looks like a furniture catalog? Or, there was the time that he released “My Best Friend’s Exorcism” about the Satanic Panic and toured the country promoting it dressed as a cardinal. The religious one, not the bird.
His latest novel is “How to Sell a Haunted House.” It continues Hendrix’s penchant for gimmicky titles but is actually a deep rumination on family trauma that just built around a home filled with possessed puppets. Louise Joyner is a single mom living far away from her family when her parents die in a mysterious car crash. She returns home to deal with matters, including her wayward brother Mark and her mother’s mountain of puppets used in her puppet ministry.
