There's a reason why it seems impossible to make a successfully faithful movie adaptation of Dungeons & Dragons. Can Honor Among Thieves pull it off?
Before Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, the tabletop roleplaying system has inspired countless player-made adaptations, which the movie will inevitably be held up against. By design, D&D is one of the most prolific methods of collective storytelling.

Today, the most famous D&D villain is undoubtedly Vecna from Stranger Things, with viewers - now overly familiarized with D&D - theorizing that the next big bad will be Tiamat. While still not as prolific as other fantasy/sci-fi based properties like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Dungeons and Dragons stands on its own as a foundational cultural force. Rather than Hollywood movies, D&D's place in the zeitgeist is cemented mostly by unofficial and smaller adaptations.
Smaller Adaptations Pose An Even Bigger Problem For a long time, there have been other smaller adaptations and jokes about the franchise that Honor Among Thieves will have to either use as well or seem strange for missing. Moreover, even if Honor Among Thieves' jokes and overall treatment can somewhat satisfy fans, it's a tall order for a big-budget Hollywood movie to achieve what so many other previous, low-budget, player-driven adaptations have already accomplished perfectly.
Unless the studio is planning a sequel or trilogy, the movie is likely to fall short of expectations surrounding a D&D story with a $45 million budget. This is why the buzz surrounding Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves scarcely compares to the hype for the next chapters of Critical Role, the Pathfinder and D&D-inspired home-brew-game-turned-cultural-phenomenon.
