Uniformed and plainclothes Metro Vancouver Transit Police officers were in and around the Metrotown SkyTrain for four days last month targeting crime in the area.

A four-day anti-crime enforcement around Burnaby's Metrotown SkyTrain station turned up a variety of illicit drugs, stolen merchandise and weapons – including a meat cleaver and a medieval-looking bludgeon.

Uniformed and plainclothes Metro Vancouver Transit Police officers spent four days in and around the SkyTrain station, the bus loop, and Metrotown mall in an effort to address crime and safety in the area, according to a news release Thursday. The enforcement resulted in 56 arrests for weapons possession, drug possession and outstanding warrants, the release said.

Officers also seized drugs , 21 knives, a half-dozen cans of bear spray, two replica handguns, multiple brass knuckles, a meat cleaver, a retractable baton, and a homemade bludgeon. The anti-crime blitz was the second such project by transit police this year, following a similar three-day initiative in mid-April.

"Metro Vancouver Transit Police continues to work closely with Metropolis at Metrotown security to address issues of theft and safety in the area surrounding Metrotown SkyTrain Station, including the adjacent bus loop, Metropolis at Metrotown shopping centre, and nearby businesses," stated Thursday’s release.
