With spring's increase in activity along the Capital Area Greenbelt trail, there’s a growing clash with relocated homeless people now camping there.
in Harrisburg this past winter, one of the relocation zones was along the popular Capital Area Greenbelt trail just off Cameron Street.
However, PennLive received a detailed complaint from one Greenbelt user who noticed a marked increase in homeless tents near portions of the trail in south Harrisburg. He wasn’t the only one, either. “They have to figure out, ‘where am I going to go?’” Lingenfelter said of her former shelter clients. “We always see the anxiety of clients, ‘where am I going to sleep tonight?’”
The Cameron Street section of the Greenbelt was the intended relocation zone from some of the estimated 40 homeless moved from beneath the Mulberry Street Bridge when that sprawling encampment was closed by the city due to health and sanitation reasons in late January. “You are actually seeing more people choosing PennDOT,” Lingenfelter said. “What will that look like if it does get over-crowded? Will that cause other problems? What will that look like when people want to use the Greenbelt and there’s a clash with our unhoused neighbors?”
