Hollywood Boulevard may get a makeover. L.A. City Councilman Mitch O'Farrell unveiled a master plan to revitalize the area by dramatically reducing car lanes and increasing sidewalk space for pedestrians
I drive through Hollywood on a weekly basis, its congested traffic bottlenecks filled with tour buses, creepy street performers, and aging buildings encompass a once- glamorous part of Southern California. Most locals avoid the area completely and wonder what the millions of visitors from around the world think about the decline of the area.
There is now a plan in the works to completely makeover one of the most famous boulevards in the world, to emulate the leading promenades like Champs-Élysées. L.A. City Councilman Mitch O'Farrell unveiled a master plan to revitalize the area by dramatically reducing car lanes and increasing sidewalk space for pedestrians.
In a highly congested area with 70% of the existing space used by cars and trucks, only 30% is dedicated to pedestrians. The Boulevard is already closed on a frequent basis for major film premieres, and awards shows, so the traffic flow has already adapted in the past. The plan for car-free pedestrian promenades and event spaces has been widely applauded by fans of the area. Already $4.1 million has been appropriated for the makeover.
According to the developers, “ Over time, the Walk of Fame has fallen into disrepair, and many visitors leave disappointed with their experience. The new plan is to develop a new vision that celebrates the past, looks towards the future and restores its original vision of a place that maintains the glory of the community whose name means glamour and excitement in the four corners of the world.”
“2020 will mark the 60th anniversary of the first star ceremony. The Hollywood Walk of Fame Concept Plan is the first step in re-imagining the Walk of Fame for the 21st Century.” Design work is being led by one of my favorite firms Gensler, with the support of Sam Schwartz Transportation Consultants, DCA Civil Engineering Group, Historic Resources Group, Studio MLA, and Leland Saylor Associates.
