Coupled with compression issues and concerns over lyrics, this is how we end up spending hours of our lives listening to synthesized string renditions of Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head and Moon River.
I experienced all these joyless varieties over my hours on hold: synth string versions of aged hits; flat, crackly versions of classical pieces and endlessly looped ads cutting into generic pop. My husband looked at me sympathetically, as though I might be suffering from Stockholm syndrome. “You’ve clearly had time to give this some thought.”
