When completed, it would be the longest contiguous recreational trail in Indiana.
Tuesday night, Gov. Eric Holcomb announced that the Indiana Department of Natural Resources would award $29.5 million to construct a 62.3-mile rail trail called the Monon South Trail, which when completed, would be the longest contiguous recreational trail in Indiana.
"Indiana is continuing to blaze new trails in conservation and outdoor recreation — and today, we're excited to announce we're blazing our longest trail yet, connecting communities across Southern Indiana," Holcomb said in a news release."The Monon South Trail will preserve a piece of our Hoosier history while promoting quality of place in our rural communities."
Work will begin this year on the Monon South Trail, which will span five counties in southern Indiana — portions of Floyd, Clark, Washington, Lawrence and Orange counties. It's unclear how long work will take. The trail will follow the route of the Monon railway, starting in New Albany and passing through Borden, New Pekin, Salem, Campbellsburg, Saltillo, Orleans and Mitchell. Officials said a significant amount of rail that will need to come up, so the final price tag of the project is unknown.
A successor to the Monon Railroad, CSX, last operated trains on the southern portion of the line in 2008 and abandoned the rail line in 2018. Through a process called railbanking, saving railroad rights-of-way for potential future use, Radius Indiana and New Albany petitioned from CSX its use as a recreational trail.The Monon Railroad adopted its name in 1956, but its history began over a century earlier.
