A man caught at Nashville International airport may have to spend the holidays in a Tennessee jail after his Christmas presents — 36 kilograms of cannabis, gift-wrapped to perfection — were discovered by authorities.
Somphone Temmeraj, 57, was arrested after both human and K-9 officers detected a strong, pungent cannabis odour from his luggage. Although the three pieces of luggage appeared to be filled with Christmas gifts, the Sativa Santa had actually filled his sack with gift-wrapped, vacuum-packed bags of weed. Temmeraj had been travelling to Nashville from Seattle, according to court documents, and was bonded from jail this morning.The arrest comes as a staunch reminder that travellers must be careful of how they travel with their stashes over the holiday season — if at all.
A domestic flight from Toronto to Vancouver carrying 255 passengers was diverted to Seattle last month after weather and mechanical delays forced an emergency landing. Travellers are advised that even in cases of an emergency landing, U.S. law is applicable — that means any cannabis products should be flushed if at all possible before landing.
The takeaway? It might be preferable to purchase cannabis, be it a gift or for yourself, once you reach the destination to ensure a happy, green Christmas.
