This CBC Ottawa series explores the experiences of individuals living with HIV in Canada, particularly focusing on the challenges faced by newcomers. With rising HIV rates, the series highlights the importance of cultural understanding and support for those navigating life with the virus.

HIV rates are rising in Canada and Ottawa — but with medical advances, the significance of the diagnosis is very different than in its early days.

Doctors say they're seeing a jump in new cases, and emphasize it's important to bring a cultural lens to help with acceptance and treatment. Alex Johnston didn't expect to survive after being diagnosed with HIV in the ‘90s. “The first question that came to my mind was: Who is going to take care of my kids?” recalled Haoua Inoua about the moment she found out she was HIV-positive.

Chris Tooriram, pictured here holding a photo of himself as a younger man, says the experience of being charged with sexual assault and his HIV status written about in the newspaper remains humiliating, despite the charges being withdrawn.
