Driver Pritpal Lehl is facing a lengthy prison sentence over the August 2018 killing of Paul De Pledge, who was hit while cycling to work.

The brother of a Brampton forklift driver who was killed while cycling to work by a runaway trailer — stolen minutes earlier by an unlicensed driver — told a Brampton court how the “dreadful” news of his brother’s death and images of the crime scene will “haunt” him for the rest of his life.

Making matters worse was the news the now-convicted driver, Pritpal Lehl, had fled the scene, leaving the family and police searching for who was behind the “cowardly” hit and run. Lehl was not arrested until November 2018. De Pledge was biking to work on Summerlea Road shortly after 6 a.m. when he was hit and dragged about 60 metres by the stolen trailer, which had become unhitched and crossed into oncoming traffic. De Pledge was found dead about two hours later.

Though he has no driving convictions, Mountjoy noted that Lehl, who was on bail at the time for an unrelated aggravated assault, has a criminal record dating back to the late 1990s, with entries for violence, drugs, parole violations and breach of court orders. As her client looked on from the prisoner’s box, Abbasi said Lehl’s record is “very dated and unrelated” to the “extremely avoidable tragedy” of De Pledge’s death.
