Tennessee State University, led by coach Duante Abercrombie, will become the first Historically Black College to offer an NCAA Division I hockey program starting next year. Abercrombie's journey from a tough Washington, D.C. neighborhood to coaching at the highest levels of hockey is an inspiring story of perseverance and achievement.

Duante Abercrombie, head coach of the Tennessee State University men’s hockey program, is making history. TSU will be the first Historically Black College to have an NCAA Division I hockey program starting next year. Abercrombie grew up in a tough neighborhood in Washington, D.C., where his mother enrolled him in various activities to keep him off the streets. At age 7, he discovered his love for hockey and played at the Fort Dupont Ice Arena, a developmental program for inner-city youth.

He went on to play in the Federal Hockey League and coach at multiple levels, including as an assistant for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Marlies. Before being hired as TSU’s head coach, he was interviewed by Sheldon Keefe and Brendan Shanahan. Abercrombie sees his journey as a testament to perseverance and the power of believing in oneself
