The Crown Hill Cemetery organization has begun a fund drive to restore brick work at four grave sites.A group is seeking financial help to restore arches in a portion of Pasadena's historic Crown Hill Cemetery that was reserved for Hispanic settlers.

"I'd say 90 percent of the graves are handmade," Mike Murphey, president of the nonprofit Crown Hill Cemetery Association, said of the section called"the Mexican Allotment.""Some of these had pretty nice brickwork, some archways. But over the years, those bricks have collapsed." The association has priced work to restore brick arches that were over four graves at between $1,500 and $2,000."They're beautiful graves, but they'd look so much better with the original bricks where the family put them," Murphey said."Those bricks are probably a hundred years old."The cemetery dates to 1906. The area saw an influx of Mexican residents in the early to mid-1920s to work for local ranchers and farmers, Murphey said.

A World War II veteran, Juan Adame, is buried in the section, his grave adorned with an American flag. "We're just trying to get some people involved," Murphey said."This is Pasadena's history. We need to take care of it."
