K'omoks First Nation has appointed Marion Buller, UVic's current chancellor, to the newly created role of justice of the peace.

Fuller has blazed a trail by becoming the first First Nation woman to serve as a B.C. provincial court judge, and also played a key role in Canada’s Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls inquiry, becoming Chief Commissioner of the independent body.She says taking on the role of justice of the peace for K’omoks will help push the First Nation further toward self-determination while improving community safety.Nation’s laws in their own ways,” she said.
The nations says with Buller’s appointment, they will no longer need to solely rely on B.C.’s provincial court and RCMP, the latter of which does not acknowledge First Nation laws, to settle disputes and prosecute individuals who break local laws.
