Capping off a 13-year struggle to save the famous West Side conjunto music venue, Bexar County approved a $142,000 contract this week with Alta Architects to design the finish-out on a section of the 10,600-square-foot Lerma’s Building, a five-unit strip center.
“We have this very unique history of American folk music that was born in that area,” Segura said. “You see a lot of the Chicano blues, Chicano jazz folks that come in and are mingling those sounds together. You have the Randy Garibay influence. That comes from that neighborhood.” More than $3 million has been raised through a “Save Lerma’s” campaign to repair the building and replace its roof, back wall, plumbing and electrical systems, with Davila Construction as the prime contractor. About $1 million more is needed to finish two units in the strip center.
