“People told me, ‘Oh, girls don’t do that. Black people don’t do that.’”
Growing up in the desert of Southern California, I loved going outside to explore on my own, and I started taking on longer hikes by myself in college. People told me, “Oh, girls don’t do that. Black people don’t do that. And you definitely can’t do it by yourself.” But my stubborn and strong-spirited self did it anyway.Now, I’m hooked on the freedom and independence that comes with hiking alone.
