Fighting of fire slowed by extremely steep terrain; firefighter injured.
Another day of fire on the bluff overlooking Cameron Lake meant another day of Highway 4 being closed and access to Port Alberni and the west coast of Vancouver Island left to a detour route over industrial roads.
Fire information officer Donna McPherson said they are making progress, but progress is slow as some of the terrain is incredibly steep and there is plenty of falling rock and debris The B.C. Wildfire Service confirmed one of its firefighters was injured during its response on the Cameron Bluffs wildfire. While a full investigation will be conducted, no details were released Sunday.
The first supply convoys, with groceries, fuel and other goods, left Lake Cowichan at 5 a.m. Sunday heading for Port Alberni. There are four escorted convoys scheduled each day for as long is required.
