Investor Ray Washburne and family partners are purchasing the historic Country Club Plaza, the oldest U.S. retail center.
The family that owns Dallas’ most exclusive retail address is eyeing a purchase of what’s considered the country’s oldest shopping center.
Investor Ray Washburne’s HP Village Partners LP has contracted to buy County Club Plaza, the Kansas City property that’s considered to be the first shopping center constructed in the U.S.Since 2008, Washburne’s firm has owned Highland Park Village – itself a landmark retail center with some of North Texas’ most exclusive stores paying the highest rents.Earlier this year, Country Club Plaza’s owners – Macerich and Taubman Properties – defaulted on almost $300 million in debt on the property.
The sale of the Kansas City landmark is scheduled to close before the end of the year. The deal is being widely reported in Kansas City.CyrusOne is planning an expansion at its 90-acre data center complex in Allen, one of the largest such tech centers in the state.One of East Dallas’ largest development sites at Live Oak and Bennett streets east of downtown will be the site of a 327-unit apartment community.
Country Club Plaza’s retail lineup includes well-known brands Coach, H&M, Tommy Bahama, Johnny Was and Tiffany & Co. The historic property last sold in 2016 for more than $600 million.Washburne’s family has connections with Kansas City. His wife, Heather Hill Washburne, is a descendant of legendary Texas oilman H.L. Hunt, whose son Lamar Hunt founded the Kansas City Chiefs.
