Strong winds and snowfall disrupt travel in British Columbia.
Winds reaching 140 km/h have been recorded at Vancouver Island weather stations following Environment Canada's latest wind warning for the B.C. coast. The warnings encompass exposed coastal regions of the island's north and B.C.'s central coast due to an approaching Pacific frontal system. While the weather agency predicted southeast winds up to 90 km/h, several stations reported gusts exceeding 110 km/h Thursday morning, including Solander Island where peak winds reached 136 km/h.
Environment Canada anticipates the winds to subside Thursday afternoon, but the storm is also expected to bring up to 15 centimeters of snow to the north coast and northern Interior. Heavy snowfall is anticipated before diminishing Thursday evening, and drivers are warned of potentially challenging travel conditions. These warnings follow storms earlier this week that brought heavy rain and wind to B.C.'s coast and snow to the Interior. The search continues for a person missing since their home was destroyed by a mudslide that traversed the Sea to Sky Highway near Lions Bay last weekend. Emergency crews recovered the body of one of two residents on Sunday, the day after strong winds impacted the coast, causing power outages for hundreds of thousands of BC Hydro customers on the south coast
