The cost of health care is deterring young people from visiting the doctor — and it's keeping them from taking their prescribed medications, according to data from Nationwide Retirement Institute. In the most extreme cases, those expenses have pushed people into bankruptcy.
A third of people aged 25 to 45 have delayed seeking medical attention to save on health-care costs, according to a poll by Nationwide Retirement Institute.
About 1 in 5 participants said that health-care expenses had “an extreme impact on their financial well-being.”The cost of care has become so onerous that some people have ditched going to the doctor altogether. To save on health care, a third of people aged 25 to 45 avoided seeing a medical professional, hoping instead that their condition will eventually resolve, according to data from the Nationwide Retirement Institute.Close to 3 in 10 of the participants said they considered not seeking care to avoid their high deductibles, while about 20% said they stretched their prescription drugs by taking less than the recommended dosage.
