To my fellow white and non-Black POC trainers/coaches/instructors: We need to pay attention. I mean, really, really close attention. I mean beyond the “my profile pic is a black square” kind of attention. We need to listen, digest, understand, and act.

. We need more than an “I’ve been searching for the right words” kind of understanding and action. The right words start with: Police brutality is killing Black people in our country. Our systems are racist and oppressive toward Black people, and Black lives more than matter. And to be clear, not just in its hashtag form #BlackLivesMatter, but with true, contextualized, and consequential appreciation and celebration of the faces and promise and life within those lives.

Thirdly, I also recognize that it can be scary to speak out—you might get it wrong, you might sound like you don’t know what you’re talking about, or you might sound like a performative ally. If we say the wrong thing, we might be reprimanded, called out, embarrassed, or ashamed. People might be afraid of losing their jobs or their white followers, clients, or customers if they are too vocal. I get it.

If we are truly in this business to help people live healthier lives, we must recognize that living a healthier life necessarily means that you don’t walk around in fear for it, that you don’t bear the emotional brunt of continuous trauma, and that you don’t have to constantly advocate for your existence.
