When Maxim Moiseyev, 22, could not open the rear door, he began assisting passengers towards the front, refusing to leave before them. He died in the fire

MOSCOW — A 22-year-old flight attendant who gave his life helping passengers escape was among the heroes of the Moscow plane disaster on Sunday in which 41 of the 78 people on board were killed.

Flames spread on the tarmac, suggesting that fuel was leaking and burning, as passengers descended the inflatable emergency slides and fled from the wreck.Dmitry Khlebnikov, a passenger seated in the 10th row, told journalists that he was only alive thanks to the crew. After completing military academy and serving in the army, Moiseyev passed a correspondence course in civil aviation. He had worked as an attendant for only 15 months.Russian radio station, Kommersant FM, reported that some passengers had slowed the evacuation by insisting on retrieving their hand luggage from overhead compartments, even as those behind them clamored to exit the burning plane.

Tatyana Kasatkina, a flight attendant, said: “We took off and flew into a cloud, it was hailing heavily. At that moment there was a bang, this kind of flash, like electricity. It all happened very quickly.” Using a transponder to send coded signals, the pilots first indicated that their radio had failed — a problem, though not usually a severe one — and then, just four minutes before landing, communicated that they had an emergency on board, the radio station Echo of Moscow reported.
