An arctic front moved through North Texas on Wednesday and sent temperatures into the 20s by Thursday morning., some local agencies are warning residents to protect from cold-related illnesses such as frostbite and hypothermia.

Other vulnerable populations include older adults with inadequate heating and food, babies sleeping in cold rooms and people experiencing homelessness,. In a tweet, the National Weather Service Fort Worth office said severe cold that can be “life-threatening” for unsheltered individuals. Frostbite is a type of injury that occurs when the skin and underlying tissues freeze, which can result in loss of feeling and color. It can permanently damage the body, and severe frostbite can lead to amputation. People with low blood circulation are considered more at risk.

Symptoms of hypothermia in adults are shivering, fumbling hands, exhaustion, confusion, memory loss and slurred speech. In babies, hypothermia can show up as bright red, cold skin.
