Anyone who consumed food from this Edmonton restaurant during these periods is eligible for post-exposure immunization.
Understanding Hepatitis A and Vaccination
Hepatitis A is an infection of the liver caused by a virus. It can be prevented through immunization if administered within 14 days of initial exposure. The vaccine is a single dose.
After receiving the vaccine, individuals should monitor for symptoms for 50 days. Symptoms to watch for include tiredness, poor appetite, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain and fever.
Later symptoms may include dark-coloured urine, light-coloured stools and yellowing of the eyes or skin. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should contact a doctor.
Transmission and Public Health Advice
Hepatitis A spreads through the fecal-oral route after direct contact. People can also contract the illness indirectly by ingesting contaminated food or water.
Those with the virus can transmit it through food and beverages if they do not properly wash their hands. Some individuals, especially young children, may carry the infection without showing symptoms but are still infectious.
Health officials urge anyone who may have been exposed to seek immunization promptly and to practice good hygiene to prevent further spread.
