The women’s race at the New York City Marathon went out slowly and finished in a sprint. With a final burst of speed after the 26-mile mark, Hellen Obiri of Kenya emerged as the winner, breaking the tape in Central Park in 2:27:23. Letesenbet Gidey of Ethiopia was second in 2:27:29, and Sharon Lokedi of Kenya, the defending champion, was third in 2:27:33. The runners in the small elite field—14 runners at the starting line—had incredible credentials. Four had PRs of faster than 2:20.

Taylor led the group through a 5:34 21st mile, and she hung with the pack through a 5:18 split for the next. Viola Cheptoo of Kenya, a runner-up in New York in 2021, led a 5:04 23rd mile. By then, Taylor dropped back and the pack was whittled to five: Cheptoo was followed by Obiri, Lokedi, Gidey, and Brigid Kosgei. Gidey, 25, and Obiri, 33, have impressive track credentials.
