Yes, I was very much alive and around when the story happened, but I guess when you are young, you don’t read the newspapers, which is a blessing nowadays. II didn’t read the newspapers. But no, I was not aware of it, so it was a very nice surprise to read about it and realize that it was a true story. Somehow, that story had completely escaped me.

Well, my mother was the 13th of 14 children of a working-class, London family. So when I grew up, I had lots of aunts—the last sort of seven of those children were all women. And I think, to a certain extent, Dorothy reminded me of them. But I think she’s also a very iconic sort of female character in the sense of the pragmatism and the practicality that women often have to show in their lives, because it’s the only way the family can keep going. And I’ve always admired women for that quality.
