Hedge Fund Billionaire Ken Griffin Donates $300 Million To Harvard, Bolstering His Spot Among America’s Biggest Givers by _pheebini
His lifetime giving now stands at an estimated $1.86 billion.
“Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences is committed to advancing ideas that will shape humanity’s future, while providing important insight into our past,” Griffin said in a statement from Harvard announcing the gift. “I am excited to support the impactful work of this great institution.” Harvard President Lawrence Bacow added that Griffin’s choice to support Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences “underscores the power of education to transform lives and to expand the reach of our research in every field imaginable.”
The gift will be used to support research at and access to the Harvard faculty of arts and sciences, which encompasses 40 academic departments, Harvard’s undergraduate program and all of its Ph.D. programs. Griffin previously donated , primarily for undergraduate financial aid. He also donated $125 million to the University of Chicago in 2017. Typically, gifts of $100 million or more are pledges over a number of years; however, a spokesperson for Citadel toldGriffin, 54, is most well known as the founder and CEO of alternative investment giant Citadel.
