A mixed bag of snow, rain and windy conditions made for a messy Saturday for the majority of the province.
Many parts of the island received their first snowfall of the year while other areas were drenched with heavy rainfall. Tiffany Cheeks, a meteorologist with Environment Canada says snowfall amounts were not high, with areas such as Deer Lake recording 8 cm. But, the snow mixed with ice pellets and rain made for a messy afternoon on the west coast as RCMP in Deer Lake and Corner Brook responded to a number of collisions yesterday as a result of slippery road conditions.She says Port aux Basques recorded the highest rainfall amount with 84.1 mm, while wind gusts of 120 km/h were recorded in the Wreckhouse area.
Cheeks says while this weather system is on its way out, another similar weather system is forecasted for the island on Monday. They’re expecting to see another mixed bag of rain, freezing rain and snow with the Avalon and South Coast seeing mostly showers while Central is expected to see a bit of everything.
