It’s unlikely that there will be much fanfare when the ban on heavy fuel oil for marine ships in Inuit Nunangat—with the exception of Nunatsiavut and parts of Nunavik—comes into effect on July 1. It’s been in the making for 10 years, and has been endlessly debated and discussed. For the most part, it mirrors a ban that has been in place in Antarctica since 2011, and, like that ban, attempts to remove this dangerous fuel entirely from modern marine shipping. Andrew Dumbrille.
Thankfully, this means no cost implication for goods transported by ship to communities, but it also means those vessels will still be carrying and using HFO close to coastal communities. Inuit organizations have been calling for cost mitigation measures to be put in place ever since the HFO ban was agreed in 2021. Nothing is in place now, so the last resort has been to exempt resupply vessels.
