The fire started in the sun porch at the rear of the home, which was being heated by a portable heater.
A fire that killed two elderly Comox residents was likely caused by a portable heater, cigarette or a combination of the two, says Comox Fire Rescue Chief Gord Schreiner.
“We’re just trying to nail down the cause,” Schreiner said Monday. “But it’s definitely accidental and unfortunate.” Schreiner, who knew the elderly couple, who were in their early 90s, said they were sitting on their fully enclosed sun porch Friday afternoon when the blaze started around 4 p.m. “The smoke alarms in the house did work and the house, of course, had regular heat in it, but in the area where they were sitting, they had a portable heater and one of them was a smoker.”
