More than 230 million people – over 70% of the lower 48 – will see temperatures of 90 or above over the next week.
Among the heat alerts in places Sunday are heat advisories, excessive heat watches and excessive heat warnings. Cities under heat advisories include El Paso, Dallas and Houston in Texas, along with Oklahoma City, Kansas City, New Orleans and Nashville. Cities under excessive heat warnings include San Antonio and Austin in Texas; Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Phoenix and Tucson in Arizona.
Temperatures there reached 122 degrees Fahrenheit, beating its previous record for June 11 set in 1921, which was 121 degrees.Elsewhere, Roswell, New Mexico, hit 111 degrees, smashing its previous daily record of 106 degrees set in 2008. And Denver International Airport reached 100 degrees, tying not only its daily record set in 2013, but also tying the day for earliest in a calendar year when it reached 100 degrees.
