HALIFAX, N.S. — Canadians don't recognize the signs of a stroke despite cases continuing to rise, according to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
The FAST campaign, which stands for Face – is it drooping?, Arms – can you raise both?, Speech – Is it slurred or jumbled?, and Time to call 9-1-1 right away, is a campaign made to recognize and remember the most common signs of stroke.The data shows nearly one million Canadians are living with the consequences of a stroke and 108,707 strokes happen annually.Still, recognition is improving.
Bowser, of Halifax, was 27 when he suffered a stroke the morning before his wedding in rural Newfoundland in 2011. At the hospital, doctors initially thought Barry’s symptoms were drug-related, but a neurologist at a larger hospital diagnosed him with a stroke after a CT scan.
