Halifax police investigating Monday morning Dartmouth death as suspicious | SaltWire #newsupdateCarrie Smith, a sexual assault survivor, went to the Nova Scotia legislature in Halifax Monday with grave concerns about a new bill that would give the province broad powers to access Nova Scotians’ personal health-care information.
Doctors Nova Scotia says it’s been told by the Department of Health that that the purpose of the amendment is to allow patients to access their own records through the YourHealthNS app, which it launched last November. The department also said it wants to collect aggregate information in order to better plan services or put health resources where they are needed. The group is particularly concerned that the legislation could compromise the confidential doctor-patient relationship.
Under the proposed legislation, the government would have access to a wide swath of patients' physical and mental health records. It would allow access to an individual’s health-card number and their substitute decision-maker. Besides patient-doctor information, the government would have access to pharmacy records, nursing home records and Canadian Blood Services records.
“You can see that patients that might seek access to contraception. The system would benefit from knowing from a planning perspective how to resource for that need. I don’t know why the system needs to know which individuals are accessing that service.”
