Marika Schenkels is studying to become a doctor and already has an undergrad in medicine at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. She's currently working at the Colchester Research Group and volunteering at the Truro Walk-In Clinic. - Chelsey Gould/Truro NewsTRURO, N.S. — Marika Schenkels already has people asking to be on her patient waitlist.

“I feel like until we can get more doctors, we really need patients to try to learn as much as they can and be their own advocates,” said Schenkels. “Just to try to take some of that load off as best they can.”The World Health Organization defines health literacy as “the cognitive and social skills which determine the motivation and ability of individuals to gain access to, understand and use information in ways which promote and maintain good health.

“Marika had done a wonderful last couple of years, the last two summers, to help us spread the word, increase awareness,” said Dr. Murdo Ferguson, CRG investigator. “I think it’s fantastic.” “And I'm always up for a good picture. I'm not a good artist, but I think a diagram sometimes ,” said Schenkels. “So trying to use those tools to really convey to people what healthcare problems they're working with, I think, is key.
