The Department of Health and Community Services is monitoring an increase in pertussis cases throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Symptoms can last from weeks to months. Infants are at the highest risk of complications, such as pneumonia and seizures. Pertussis can be treated with antibiotics, but vaccination is the most effective means of controlling the spread of pertussis. Pertussis vaccination is offered to:All children between four to six years of age;Adults at least 10 years from their school-age dose.
