Larry Owens is a fierce force in Michael R. Jackson’s breathtaking musical A Strange Loop.
Four years ago when Larry Owens moved to New York to become a professional performer he auditioned for “everything,” as he explains. However, he was not cast in cast in anything. A Baltimore native, Owens’ love for musical theater had already been at full throttle for years and years. “Musical theater has been my life saving grace,” he says. “Musical theater storytelling changes my body chemistry.
One of them was a talented playwright, composer and lyricist Michael R. Jackson. “I didn't even have Stepenwolf training. I just had the voracious love of the art form,” says Owens who had more or less hung around and volunteered at Musical Theatre Factory hoping he would be noticed.
Owens was cast as Usher and was so bowled over by the part. “I am bright-eyed and bushy-tailed now, but was even more bright-eyed and bushy-tailed then,” he says. Owens was so ecstatic he wrote to Michael: “I want everyone in my life to see this piece.” In many ways the role mirrored his own experience. “I don't fall into the prism of castability,” he explains. “What makes the physical presence of Usher is that he is an overweight, black, queer person.
