"The scariest part was when I didn't really understand it at first and then they sat me down and told me you're gonna lose your hair and all this, that was a very hard part for me."Because AML starts in the stem cells of the blood, bone marrow transplants are an effective treatment and family members tend to be the best donor match to reduce chances of rejection. McNeil's brother Brandon McNeil, who is three years older, was a perfect match.

Ashely McNeil when she was going through chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia . Now 34, McNeil has been cancer free for 21 years. CONTRIBUTED - ContributedBefore her diagnosis, McNeil was experiencing symptoms that concerned her parents. She was very tired, experienced heavy bleeding and lost weight. There were also white patches on McNeil's back and leg pain.

"That's another really scary part because I'm allergic to the blood product so there were a few times I didn't have, like, a Benadryl or something before," said McNeil."I would turn into a lobster like I would get really sick. It was really scary and I'd swell up, too." Her family's support was an important part of McNeil's cancer journey and it was also one of the challenging parts for her.
