Hazbin Hotel unveils a new design for Vaggie, Charlie's girlfriend. In 2019, Vivienne Medrano posted a pilot for the series on YouTube, and in 2020, A24 picked it up. Though news about the show has been slow, the company has been ramping up its marketing since the beginning of the year, teasing new designs for various characters.
Hazbin Hotel follows Charlie, the princess of Hell, as she seeks a solution to the realm's overpopulation problem. Instead of angels coming down for a yearly purge in which they kill demons, Charlie wants to rehabilitate them and send them to Heaven instead. Though most of Hell's inhabitants aren't on board with Charlie's plan, her girlfriend, Vaggie, steadfastly supports her. Vaggie acts as the manager of the rehab hotel.
The original Hazbin Hotel pilot was crowdfunded through Patreon and put together by freelance animators. Though the overall quality of the animation was high, it's not surprising that A24 has elected to polish the characters. For the redesigns revealed so far, the changes haven't been drastic; instead, the characters are more streamlined, allowing their personalities to shine through more.
While Hazbin Hotel quickly gained a cult following after its debut, it also drew some criticism. The show prominently features LGBTQ+ characters and relationships, and Angel Dust, the hotel's first resident, is an unapologetic drug-addicted adult film star who doesn't take the rehabilitation program seriously. While some critics claimed that there was little point to the show's displays of excess, it's impossible to judge the series' overall goals based on just one episode.
