Jabari Smith Jr. #1 of the Houston Rockets looks to shoot during the first half against the Atlanta Hawks at State Farm Arena on October 19, 2022 in Atlanta, Georgia. ATLANTA — The Rockets hung around with a chance to steal a win, but it would have taken a theft to have come away with a win.
The Rockets seemed to relish the test, and not just because the solid preseason gave them confidence. That exuberance might have helped them battle back from the brink often in the second half. With 3:30 left, the Rockets were still within four. But they were not getting stops. The Hawks came out of a time out, scored on their next three possessions to push the lead back to double-digits and then hung on for the win.
The Rockets did miss some shots at the rim they would like to keep getting. But there were not a whole bunch of open looks from deep as the Rockets made just 4 of 14 3s. Worse, the Rockets had 10 first-half turnovers, some by being sloppy but more from being unable to run their offense effectively.
