Here’s what you need to know about the Hawaii Martin Mars water bomber’s final flight from Sproat Lake to the B.C. Aviation Museum in North Saanich.
The Hawaii Martin Mars water bomber — long a symbol of firefighting in B.C. — is scheduled to fly over Vancouver Island today as it travels from Port Alberni to the B.C. Aviation Museum in North Saanich.The water bomber is expected to leave its home base on Sproat Lake this afternoon.
The museum’s Facebook page will provide live flight details prior to arrival, and its website will have a map of the best water viewing sites for the public to see the final landing, and also show the closed areas.The roar of the plane’s massive 10,000-horsepower engines will be hard to miss. But the Martin Mars can also be tracked on Flightradar24.com using the aircraft registration code CFLYL.
First, the aircraft will have beaching gears attached and be “de-watered” and winched up a ramp and onto a concrete apron.
