ICYMI: Tennis players and golfers return to their sports in droves

You can sign your own ball, keep space around you and get outside. These are some of the reasons golf and tennis are set to be among the most popular sports of the season.

“It felt like a recovery — the return to some recreational normalcy,” Applebaum said, adding the sport is perfectly suited for the times. “Tennis is one of the best recovery sports for these times because it’s affordable, accessible and generally safe,” Downey said. “And because it’s a fairly individual sport there are usually only two people on a fairly large court, so it’s set up for success for social distancing.”

“I’m sure once they try it, they’ll love it and stay with it,” Manibal said. “And, if not, at least it’s something to do until their regular sport starts up.” Toronto-based Brent Mallard, senior manager of marketing and product for Callaway Golf, which makes clubs, balls and accessories, said sales of introductory golf sets have been selling more quickly than usual. “It’s quite easy to take up the game, whether you invest in a beginner’s complete set, a used set, rent clubs, or borrow clubs,” Mallard said.
