As calls mount for ever-stricter bail reforms from the premiers and federal Conservatives, University of Ottawa criminology professor Justin Piché says critics 'got what they paid for' by funnelling millions of dollars into policing while neglecting the courts and community support programs.
Myers said that while Bill C-48 was an understandable effort by the government to respond to legitimate pressure from the premiers and law enforcement, she disagrees with the growing perception that Canada’s bail system is too lenient. Without minimizing the tragedies that have spurred the calls for stricter bail reform, Myers said that taking those isolated events and generalizing across the board would not result in measures that improve public safety.
