Harrisburg and Dauphin County officials on Monday announced new steps to crack down on illegal dumping in the city.'Illegal dumping has become an epidemic here in the city, taking a negative toll on the community, the environment, our residents — both young and old — within the affected neighborhoods within the city,' Dauphin County Commissioner Mike Pries said.Illegal dumping cases will now be prosecuted through a single district judge's office to streamline cases.
'Even if we catch someone on camera, as we have many times, they are getting off with a slap on the wrist,' she said.District Attorney Fran Chardo said offenders will be prosecuted under state code, not the city's illegal dumping law. He said it offers a chance to require people who illegally dump junk to pay fines and perform community service. Perpetrators could also risk a misdemeanor for repeat offenses.'That has a real effect. It's on your record.
