Documentarian Candacy Taylor, author of Overground Railroad, will explore Harrisburg's role in the intersection of racial justice history and the modern-day reality. Taylor will serve as keynote speaker to the 2023 Peace & Justice in PA Awards on Tuesday.
In her work examining racial justice, author, photographer, and cultural documentarian, Candacy Taylor examines the trajectory of history through the use of artifacts, historic footage, and firsthand accounts. Taylor, author of Overground Railroad, will be the keynote speaker at the Peace & Justice in PA Awards on Oct. 17.
Sundown towns, also known as sunset towns, were all-white towns and communities that practiced racial segregation by excluding non-whites via discriminatory local laws, intimidation or violence. The term originated from signs directing non-whites to leave town by sundown. She will offer a map of Harrisburg noting the locations listed in The Green Book, which was first published in 1936 for a growing Black middle class that was yearning to explore the country but faced social, legal and hostile restrictions to access hotels, restaurants and gas stations.“Some of the things that are so confoundingly frustrating for most Americans today is they say, ‘Well, it’s 2023. Why are we still dealing with this?’” Taylor said. “You look at the George Floyd protests.
